I enjoyed the advanced brand building discussion at tonik’s Potato Meter event during SF Tech Week. It added another perspective to a week full of product, security and founder conversations.

The event program named Lester Chen of a16z, Morgane Palomares of Braintrust, Malthe Sigurdsson of Stripe and Maya Spivak of marketing.fan.

  1. Pay attention to how the business is understood

The brand session added perspective on positioning and reaching customers. Alongside the week’s other conversations, it reminded me to think about how clearly a founder can explain the business to someone hearing about it for the first time.

  2. Connect brand with listening

My broader takeaway was to understand the customer’s challenge before offering a solution. For me, that applies to how we describe our work as well as the services we deliver.

My takeaway

Keep learning about brand building while listening to customers. I want the way we describe our work to reflect the problems founders actually care about.

Thank you to tonik and the speakers for the brand building discussion.
